Black History Month will forever be worth celebrating. For there isn’t a day that goes by that we aren’t utilizing something invented by the hands of a Black person. The Month of February highlights the vast array of Black Excellence. It’s a time for reflection, a time to gaze upon all that we’ve accomplished, and all of our contributions to the modern world through Black Innovations. So I’m taking a moment to honor all the Black people that built cities, like Chicago. The man responsible for that was Mr. Jean Baptiste DuSable from Haiti . Black people constructed livelihoods in climates that were never meant for them to succeed in, let alone thrive in.
Many towns were burnt down, flooded, and inhabitants massacred due to racism. Yet, despite the devastation, the tenacious spirit of the people left behind sought to somehow rebuild again. Even if it was just their own lives. What our ancestors have done serves as one of the inspirations for Lovely Coils today. It’s a fervent reminder to keep building even despite the lack of things like DEI programs for our small Black-owned businesses. Especially the lack thereof for Black Women. It’s important to proceed with building whether you have a small following, no following, or deal with favoritism from organizations that prefer other owners of small businesses. Yes, that last thing definitely happened to me. We have to keep building because our ancestors did, so that we could do more. We stand on their shoulders. Black History is infinite, and black folks come from a long line of progenitors, builders of great civilizations. We come from a myriad of Black Greatness in various forms. Therefore we can’t stop now! We must keep making Black History. Keep building together, keep pressing, keep believing, keep the faith, and above all else keep your Black Joy and get some rest on purpose.
